Every year, in January, as part of the now-traditional Artichoke Festival, the town holds a Gastronomic Fair. At this social event, the restaurants of Benicarló and the surrounding county delight Benicarló residents and visitors alike with numerous dishes made from the stellar product of Benicarló’s crop fields: the Artichoke.

As well as the Gastronomic Fair, the town also holds a mass artichoke torrada (barbecue), a horse-drawn wagon competition, a sailing regatta, etc.
=Designation of Origin=
On 18th September 1998, the Conselleria d'Agricultura, Pesca i Alimentació (Agriculture, Fishing and Food Department) of the Generalitat Valenciana (Valencian Government) ratified the Benicarló Artichoke Designation of Origin. This validation, which filled the whole town with pride, was the result of a joint endeavour and above all recognises an essential ingredient which, year after year, is produced on our land in line with the most stringent standards of quality and excellence.


During the weeks following this festival a series of Gastronomic Artichoke Days take place during which the town’s restaurants offer their customers delicious, creative dishes based on the tasty artichoke. Also, since 2008, the town’s bars and café’s have been organizing the Jornades del Pinxo (Tapas Days) when people can sample artichoke-based creations at affordable prices.
=Cuisine=
The ways in which the Benicarló Artichoke can be used in cooking are almost infinite. You can see this in the huge repertoire of delicious starters and stews and the growing range of artichoke-based desserts that the town’s restaurants produce, never forgetting the classic, delicious braised artichoke.
